Andrés and Christina are the Latin Grammy-winning music duo 123 Andrés. Their catchy songs and lively performances get the whole audience dancing, singing, and learning! Their songs explore cultural and curriculum connections while having fun through interactive music. Together with the Dance Party for Parkinson's Foundation, we host dance classes for dozens of Long Islanders battling Parkinson's disease. The classes were started by Beth Hochstein who was diagnosed with the disease just before her she turned 37. She discovered that dance helped her deal with her symptoms. The science backs her up. Studies have shown that dance benefits people dealing with Parkinson's disease by slowing its progression, improving overall movement, providing a mood and confidence boost, and offering participants a sense of freedom. She wanted to spread the message to everybody else "to keep moving and keep going." And thus was born Dance Party for Parkinson's. We're honored to host these classes here at Tilles Center. Currently in exile from his home country Egypt, comedian and activist Bassem Youssef will appear at Tilles Center on Thursday, September 28. A former heart-surgeon and pioneer of political satire in Arabic, Youssef has reinvented himself as an English-speaking stand-up comic. How did he get here? In 2011, when millions of people in Egypt took to the streets and demanded the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, Youssef used his medical skills and took action by going to Tahrir Square, where he helped treat wounded protestors. State propaganda blamed the protests on foreign operatives. Frustrated with the state media portrayal of protestors during the uprising, Youssef began recording short satirical YouTube videos from his laundry room to ridicule government propaganda. He showed snippets of state news broadcasts to which he added satirical commentary. What Youssef hoped would garner a few thousand views turned into millions! He was given his own program on which he could continue to parody news reporters, as well as Egyptian celebrities and politicians. In Egypt, his brand of comedy was groundbreaking… and put a target on his back. He fled Egypt, made a home here in the US, and started his career as a stand-up comic.
